- Episode #11 - Existential Crises and You
- Kid Chris- Wolverine Origins, Teen Titans Lost Annual #1, The Twelve #1
- Dafna - Robin #170, Teen Titans Lost Annual #1, Checkmate #22
The Bispectacult - Episode #11 - Existential Crises and You
Good news! If you think we're wrong, if Dafna got a name wrong or mispronounced something again, or you feel really, really strongly about New Frontier, you too can be on The Bispectacult thanks to our now functioning voice mail! Call us at 646-495-9203, and enter in the extension 02465. At the tone you can leave us a voice message, anywhere from a second to an hour, we'll take it all. Whether we play it all or not is another thing entirely, but we have low standards, so I wouldn't worry.
So we are back. Again. I know, the schtick is getting old, but we have a few presents for you this time around: We broke a few laws, gab about movies (mainly Cloverfield) and talk about comics as usual. Dafna talks about her trip to Japan, and the comic convention (Comiket) she attended and the massive amounts of doujinshi ingested; as well as her ill-fated trip to Star Trek: The Tour which leads to an unfortunate rendition of the Enterprise theme song at Kid Chris' urging (the ass). Kid Chris says some terribly untrue things about the kind-hearted, deeply intelligent and hopefully infinitely forgiving Ian Brill and then we complete our geek trifecta with a snooty dismissal the JLA movie before its even cast.
Welcome to The Bispectault, we try and that's what counts...right? Right?
Top Picks for December 5, 2007:
News:
We're a little behind on the news so we'll just give a little rundown on what was discussed:
Chuck Dixon on his return to 'Robin' - Dafna's happy like a kosher pig in muck, Kid Chris is indifferent, but come on people, for all of his moral faults, Chuck does good Robin voice, okay?
The Rawking Refuses to Stop - Dave Greenwald, a mutual friend of Dafna and Chris, certainly doesn't need any hits from our blog, but it's time we show him a little love. So many Daves, so little time.
Two takes on 'The Twelve' as the 'Watchmen' - While we disagreed that The Twelve is directly inspired by Watchmen, others didn't feel the same. While superhero deconstructionist stories will all, one one level or another, seem to be directly inspired by Moore's work, I think it stems more from the fact that Moore popularized the exercise then direct inspiration. That, and lets be honest, superhero deconstruction is hardly ever going to be original or new, as much as I love the genre. Or at least that's what I tried to say on the 'cast and probably failed, miserably.
Cloverfield as 9/11 - a nice write-up of the supposed hysteria.
Pris vs. Smallville's Black Canary - we all win, I think.
Captain Dafna to you, asshole - yeah, I paid good money for that experience, do you want to front?
Thanks for taking the time to listen! If you liked what you heard here, why don't you leave us a comment on iTunes? Unless you don't feel that way about us, which is why we've turned to drink for sustenance and warmth.

- Episode 10 - We're What's Wrong, Sorry
- Kid Chris- Lobster Johnson #4, Jonah Hex #All-Star Batman & Robin #8
- Dafna - Birds of Prey #112, Wonder Woman #14, Action Comics #859
The Bispectacult - Episode 10 - We're What's Wrong, Sorry
So we're a little late. We could blame the hangover from Meltdown Comics' bitchin' Boom Studio's party, but that would be a lie. If you've been following the blog, you know The Bispectacult was victim of a delightful incompatibility issue, but never mind that: We are back! Barely! This week around you, Kid Chris not only regales you with his intense love for All-Star Batman and Robin, his hopes for a new Howard the Duck movie, and his intense joy that there's no Dave getting in his way (Dave, we miss you.) By the end of the 'cast you'll realize everything that's wrong with the comic book industry is right. here.
We're not sorry. They already got our money, they already won.
Top Picks for December 5, 2007:
News:
Marvel DCU, Spoiler returns, and nary an extensive Batman trailer sploogefest in sight. You've probably had enough of the commentary/praisefest from the rest of the internet. We were kind enough to spare you our own ...this week. Dun, DUN!
Marvel and DC serve ZCult FM with take down requests
Marvel DCU - I know, it made my eyes cross a little too. Marvel's foray into digital distribution (Digital Comics Unlimited)
Spoiler returns? - mentioned in the podcast, Spoiler's memorial case was spotted in the Future!Batcave of Action Comics #859, yet she showed up, seemingly healthy and whole in Gotham Underground.
Marketing ramps up for Batman, Cake - Mmm. Cake.
Thomas Jane's letter to AICN - explaining why he dropped out of Punisher 2.
First picture of Ray Stevenson as the Punisher - pretty self explanatory.
Links:
Meltdown Comics - The Bloggining - The fine fellows at Meltdown let us leave our badly designed and poorly printed fliers by their door. If you're in LA, definitely give them a look.
Battlestar Galactica's Final Season in Jeopardy? - Damn you AMPTP!
Colleen Doran's analysis of Marvel:DCU - An interesting perspective from an artist and a fan.

- Episode 9 - Mary Jane Must Die
- Dave - X-Men #205, Ultimate Spider-Man #116, All-Star Batman & Robin #8
- Dafna - Ultimate Spider-Man #116, All-Star Batman & Robin #8, Marvel Zombies 2 #2
The Bispectacult - Episode 9 - Mary Jane Must Die
Holy Moly, yet ANOTHER regularly released podcast episode? What in good God's name is going on here? Yes! We're back with yet another episode of geeks gabbing away like they have something important to say. In between bitching about One More Day and All-Star Batman and Robin we manage to cover at least one comic we DO like, and a whole lot of comics we don't. Some things got lost in the shuffle (movie and trade picks of the week being sacrificed to the greater geeky good) but we think (and hope!) you'll enjoy this episode nonetheless.
We are The Bispetacult and we really don't wish ill on Mary Jane. Well, Dafna doesn't, but she's a bleeding heart, hairy-armpitted dirty pinko feminist anyway, so what does she know about comics?
Top Picks for November 28, 2007:
News:
We hit all of last week's highlights, from JMS' highly public spat with the big Marvel cheese himself, Quesada over the epic wankery of One More Day to the recent release of pictures showing Heath Ledger's messy Joker.
Links:
JMS on 'One More Day' - This, kids, is what we call a CLASSY smack-down.
The Clown Prince of Crime (and Nazis!) - Dave pontificates more on what bothers him about Heath's Joker.
And the hits just keep on coming... - But Dafna did it first! Nyah!
Alfred Pennyworth - Origins of his name - (wikipedia) Seriously people, where is my Alfred

- Episode 8 - Metaphorical A.I.D.S.
- Kid Chris - Groo: Hell on Earth #2, Spirit #11, Brave and the Bold #8
- Dave - Invincible #46, Captain America #32, New X-Men #44
- Dafna - Checkmate #20, Captain America #32, Angel: After the Fall #1
- Iron Man
- Alien vs. Predator: Requiem
- Wanted
The Bispectacult - Episode 8 - Metaphorical A.I.D.S.
So we're a little late, but we're within the same MONTH, so I'm going to consider that progress. And besides, we've got Kid Chris back, so lets pretend THATS the reason, and not my shoddy editing skills! So you not only get a somewhat regularly scheduled podcast, but you get Kid Chris and Dave all in one place! Ohyeahandthatgirlthatdrinksalotbutwhatever. Kid Chris and Dave hit it off right away and get straight into judging harshly this week's pulls, trailers and video game movie adaptations (they actually had expectations. I know, the mind, it boggles.) When not boggling over how a video game movie could be bad, we discuss the lack of "perma-death" in comics, the comparative hotness of ex-dead sidekicks, and the value of their recent returns. Also, we contemplate the inevitable video game adaptation of the Watchmen movie, therefor no doubt being fully responsible for forcing you to contemplate the inevitable abortion as well. Enjoy.
We are The Bispetacult and we can't be held responsible for our actions. We read them for the fights.
Top Picks for November 14, 2007:
Park the Trailer:
News:
Dave and Kid Chris discuss the Hitman movie, Dafna boggles on why they even bother to be disappointed and generally priding herself on being "better than that". Watchmen naturally comes up and we start to fear the inevitable book, comic and video game tie in, despite the seemingly excessive enjoyment we got out of our speculating. We apply our sartorial critical eyes on the recent Joker costume reveal, and Dave resists the urge to see the new Indiana Jones pictures (which are AWESOME) and Dafna realizes she's just not into Heath Ledger.
Links:
The Joker Revealed - Ehhhhh.
Watchmen Set Photos - Huuuuuuuh.
Indiana Jones Photos - Yesssss.
Top Ten Video Games That Should Be Movies- Dave came up with the challange completely on his own, but I remembered coming across this a few weeks earlier. I genuinely NEED The Secret of Monkey Island movie. Like burning.
Spooks (wikipedia) - I would link to less "legal" means of learning about this fantastic spy show, but I'm pretty sure you all have your own resources. Anyway, if you were burned by the promise of Alias check out these sexy bastards. First series/season still has one of the best cliffhangers ever.
Full Moon Fever - A comic about werewolves on the moon. It exists. God, I love the internet.
Thanks for taking the time to listen! If you liked what you heard here, why don't you leave us a comment on iTunes? Unless you don't feel that way about us. *sniff*

- Special Episode - Attack of the Sterling (Part 1)
Yes! It's finally here! Dug out from the deep depths of Dafna's ancient, sputtering hard drive, unleashed upon YOU, genteel and discriminating listener, to decipher and fear.
Mike Sterling of Progressive Ruin graces us with his presence, his staggering intellect and his endless good will. Answering our clumsy inquiries, Mike reveals the origins of his blog, his plans for the future, and how he manages to stay so damn dapper.
If you're into burly bearded men, Kid Chris and Mike Sterling are your guys, and Dafna, your graciously bearded women. Welcome to The Roadhouse! Or The Bispectacult. Whatever works for you, bro.
(Apologies to Grandma Sterling, Kid Chris really wasn't fellating the microphone, he was only checking to see if it was still on. It was. Apologies to the rest of the internet.)

- Episode 7 - The Secret 'Stache
- Dave - B.P.R.D. #4, Planet Hulk #5, New Avengers #36
- Dafna - The Brave and the Bold #4 (sigh), All-Star Superman #9, Astonishing X-Men #23
- Dave Nicktoons: Not Just Cartoons
- Dafna League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier
- Alan Moore - March of the Sinister Ducks
The Bispectacult - Episode 7 - The Secret 'Stache
What? What's this? A new podcast?!1 Yes indeed folks, we're back (again, man, how many times is it now? lets see if it sticks). Kid-Chris is out making real money leaving Dafna seeking the carnal attentions of one Dave Columbo, making his Bispectacult debut with some bitchin' black rimmed specs. After a long drought, we return to comics slightly worse for wear. Apparently comics have this weird new thing called "continuity", and after excessive bitching Dave and Dafna realize that's just one of the many risks associated with being "financially secure". After traumatic recollections of parting with our LCS, Dave rebounds spectacularly while Dafna is left floundering. When Dafna is not insulting the handicapped, Dave is professing his feelings for a certain super-powered science teacher and together they form: The Bispectacult! Skrull.
Top Picks for November 14, 2007:
Top Trades:
Fanfilm Pick(s) of the Week:
News:
Both Dave and Dafna have been out of the loop for awhile, so little recent news is discussed. That doesn't stop us from bitching about the latest Justice League announcements, the weird uncanny-valleyriffic Beowulf film and of course, the latest Star Trek rumours since Dafna hasn't learned to let the past go.
Links:
House of Secrets - Los Angeles: Dave's new LCS, the bastard (it's truly awesome though, I'll grant him that; behold Kid Chris on his throne, and Plas resplendent.)
Black Dossier Annotations - like I wouldn't link to this.
Hot Coke and Ginger - Just. Trust me. I still can't tell if it's crazy delicious or deliciously crazy.
Uncanny Valley and why you should fear it, Dave.
Blankman - I can't believe I linked to this. Dammit, Dave.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen! I know we've hit a few rough patches, and now with me hazarding GarageBand's arcane magicks, there will probably be a few more to come, but again: thanks for the listen!

Thanks again for taking the time to listen!
The Bispectacult - Episode 6 - So Sorry, Shawna
And we are BACK (part two) and this time with a double set of X chromosomes. Along for the ride is Shawna, Kid-Chris' far more gregarious and good-looking girlfriend with a heart of gold a mysterious new hair-cut. We discuss the comics for 8/15, Kid-Chris watches the new Doctor Strange animated movie, Dafna's watches Superman/Doomsday, and the world outside burns. Kid-Chris fondles his girl, Shawna squirms uncomfortably and Dafna mangles the English language once again. Yes, it is THE BISPECTACULT.

- Episode 5 - In this issue...BEER!
- Kid Chris - Justice League #10, Incredible Hulk #107, Flash #13
- Dafna - Ex Machina #29, Checkmate #15, Ultimate Spider-Man #110
Top Trades:
- Kid Chris Preacher: Volume 1
- Dafna Plain Janes
Fanfilm Pick(s) of the Week:
- Secret Wars Re-Creation Society
News:
News was a little scattered this week as a lot of it came up while reviewing our comics or getting our drink on. Of course we talked about boobs -Dafna has a fixation- and the staggering sociological implications of reducing Power Girl's significant rack. Whenever Kid-Chris even attempts to admit he sort of liked Flash #13, Dafna continuously interrupts with incredibly valid point of "but it's not fair!" We talk about the difference between Marvel and DC, the types of characters they have and the ones that tend to be successful. We don't use the exact words (since we weren't in...a wordy state), but "fanboy/girl entitlement" is, essentially, discussed. Zombie Mary Jane, is brought up, and Dafna is NOT mortally offended...evil alternate universe Dafna has arrived? She did have a pretty fantastic goatee that day -hrmmm.

Power Girl gets a breast reduction? Is it enough for anyone to notice or care?
Mary Jane Zombie and her lopsided tit!
Sue Storm is sexy...oh, and smart too...no, really - covers my problem with the characterization of Sue Storm in the movie, which really had nothing to do with Jessica Alba at all.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen!
And we are BACK! Pre-finals, finals and finally GRADUATION put a kink in our already lax schedule, but we've managed to pick ourselves off the floor (well, Ivan and Kid-Chris have, Dafna enjoyed her stay and decided to remain) and back onto the interwebs. This week's issue is a little behind, we mostly cover comics from 6/20 and, of course, the soon to be classic film: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Dafna bitches, Ivan giggles and Kid-Chris reveals himself to be the geekiest princess of them all. Also, there is drinking, finally. The recording of our Top Trades got violated terribly in the process, so that section is missing from this episode. Don't worry, you didn't miss much -mainly Dafna and Kid-Chris making Ivan feel left out with their matching "Fuck Communism" lighters.

Fanfilm Pick(s) of the Week:

- Superhero Theater: Of Mice and Men
News: the Nymphet...wank. Of course. How could we not? It's got under-aged girls in compromising positions. That's sure to bring the search hits, and that's all we really ask for. We giggle over the image of Zach Snyder and Alan Moore trying to have a conversation. Seriously, try picturing it, it's good for a laugh. Also, we enjoy the new direction Supergirl is going. She's purty.

- Unclaimed winners:
- John Walters - The Professor's Daughter
Sorry about the late episode, guys. The combo of finals and Dafna and Kid Chris actually trying to be good students for once made us fall behind a tad as well as a little sleepy. Okay, a LOT sleepy. Dafna admits a youthful indiscretion, Kid-Chris and Ivan provide the comedic awkward silence, and the concept of Zach Snyder doing Watchmen blows our respective minds. We cover -as usual- all the latest wank, even if it's a tad underage thanks to Nymphet (classy!) along with a prolonged Amazons Attack hate-fest and the conclusion that killing is DC's new rape!
It made sense at the time, guys.

- Phillip Esquivel - Blade: Undead Again
- John Walters - The Professor's Daughter
Email us your address and we'll put a little lovin' in your box. Yeah. We, have the collective maturity of a recently bar mitzvahed 13 year old boy.
Normally these would be announced in the podcast, but with midterms and papers hitting poor, abused Kid-Chris pretty hard, he didn't have time to record the segment.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen!
This week's episode covers everything from Heath Ledger as the Joker (HOT) to, of course, the soon-to-be-classic Heroes for Hire #13 tentacle rape cover (mmm. key words). Chris shows himself to be an enlightened fanboy, Dafna appreciates him NOT being a chauvinistic asshole, and we both agree that Ivan is one sexy P.A. and makes a MEAN coffee. The quality should be much, much better, so you might be able to actually HEAR this week's podcast without the aid of super-hearing.
Also? Dafna is a jackass.
